Rooted in Community
The Beginning
The Torbay Garden Club was established as the Torbay Garden Circle under the auspices of the NZ National Party to cater for the many keen gardeners in the area. It began with just 12 members.
Independence
The Circle seceded from the National Party, becoming an independent community organisation dedicated purely to the love of gardening.
Finding a Home
The Torbay Community Hall was opened, and the Garden Club found its permanent meeting place at 35 Watea Road — where we have met ever since.
A New Name
The club was renamed the Torbay Garden Club, having outgrown the title of Circle. Membership had grown significantly from those original 12 founders.
70th Jubilee
The club celebrated its 70th anniversary with a special jubilee lunch, marking seven decades of community, friendship, and beautiful gardens in Torbay.
Still Growing
With around 70 active members, the club continues to thrive. Monthly meetings feature guest speakers, trading tables, raffles, and the much-loved club shows. The annual Spring Show and Rose Show remain highlights of the calendar.
The Rhythm of Our Year
Monthly Meetings
First Wednesday of each month at 1pm. Guest speakers, demonstrations, and the club show where members exhibit their finest blooms.
Spring Show
Our annual highlight in September — open to the public. Competition covers spring bulbs, flowers, foliage, fruit, vegetables, and floral art.
Rose Show
Every November, members fill the hall with their most beautiful roses. The perfume alone is worth the visit.
Garden Trips
Coach trips are organised throughout the year to enjoy other gardens, both in Auckland and further afield.
Trading Table
A beloved tradition since the beginning — pick up bargain plants, homemade jams, and gardening books.
Social Events
From the February picnic at Long Bay to the July birthday lunch and December Christmas celebration.
